Through her teaching and her scholarly work, Denise Bernot has been at the centre of Burmese studies in France for the last thirty years. The present volume of contributions by her students, colleagues, and friends bears witness of the wide scope of her interests: twenty-two articles discuss on Burmese history, archaeology, epigraphy, anthropology, linguistic and literature. Due place is given to Arakan, an area of crucial importance on the shores of the bay of Bengal, whose role in the historical process, cultural and commercial axchange has frequently been hinted at but is still difficult to define precisely. Other contributions study the encounters between Burmese and other cultures: Portuguese and British on side, Chinese on the other. The volume closes with a bibliography of books and articles on Burma published since 1985.
