Abstract

Studies on the history of the sultanate of Patani

The sultanate of Patani, on the border between the Malay and the Thai worlds, played an important economic role in Asian commerce during the 16th and 17th centuries. The present book, which brings together eleven studies based on archaeological data as well as various sources of local and foreign origins, is one of the first multidisciplinary attempts to shed new light on the history of this sultanate. This is a pioneering undertaking on other grounds, as five articles relate to the archaeological research program conducted between 1997 and 2001 by the Ecole française d’Extrême-Orient in cooperation with the Office of Archaeology and National Museums of Thailand (10th region) and the Prince of Songkla University in Pattani. In this publication will be found the main results of surveys and test-pits, a chronology of settlement, a catalogue of imported ceramics, an attempt to understand the structure of the ancient capital and its relations with the hinterland, as well as two studies on old muslim tombstones. These articles come with a previously unpublished catalogue of local pottery, a fieldwork report on the ancient history of the lower basin of the Saiburi River, a territory which would fall under the domination of the sultanate, and two studies on Chinese and Japanese written sources regarding the region. Lastly, this publication presents two works of synthesis: one of them putting forward new hypotheses on the emergence of the sultanate, the other focusing on Patani in the sea trade during the 17th century. This publication is copiously illustrated and offers an abundant bibliography.
