The world as it seems to be
Hindu and Buddhist kingships in South and South-East Asia.
The contributors of this book attempt to compare ancient conceptions of kingship in South Asia with those of Southeast Asia. During a large part of his history, the latter region was influenced by various streams of Indian cultures until it became a land of theravadin Buddhism. Political legitimacy in Southeast Asia has not been conceived of in the same way as in South Asia. The seven authors of this volume look into the king’s figure in both Hindu and Buddhist contexts, through different materials: epigraphic documents, historical narratives, myths, tales, royal installation rituals… They deal with religion and politics as interrelated fields of action and representation at every level of social reality. Using an approach mainly based on field experience, they reconsider local societies in the larger context of their links to central powers. Taken together, these contributions provide a better understanding of basic differences between Buddhist and Hindu kingships and societies.
