Les Grès angkoriens (9e-14e siècle) / Angkorian Stonewares (9th-14th C.)

Since the 2000s, the discovery of several kiln sites around Angkor and the numerous research studies conducted on ceramics have significantly advanced our knowledge and made it possible to precisely define five major stoneware production groups in the Angkor region or in the provinces. The constituents of a new classification are presented in this study, they include: Kulen type stoneware, unglazed stoneware, Buriram type stoneware, Choeung Ek type stoneware and Torp Chey type stoneware.

For each of these production groups, this study provides information on the technical specifications—paste, decoration and glazes—the chronology, and the repertoire of forms.

This classification was established by comparing data from excavations (a corpus of nearly 300,000 sherds, including approximately 45,000 stoneware, recovered from more than thirty sites) with assemblages from surveys and research conducted at Angkorian kiln sites since 2000. These data derive from the research of various international teams working in Cambodia, including those conducted since 2007 by the Cerangkor programme. Museum collections were also examined, as, they have the advantage of providing complete forms.

From these different sources, it was possible to distinguish more than 320 types and numerous variants, as well as to propose a general dating scheme.
