About - Thomas P. Barrett

Thomas P. Barrett is PhD candidate in the Faculty of Oriental Studies, University of Oxford. His research focuses on the history of late imperial China. His doctoral thesis seeks to evaluate the significance of foreign middlemen employed in late Qing and Republican China’s legations and consulates as a means to trace how Western European diplomatic practice came to be institutionalised in the Chinese context. He is also an active academic translator, most recently working on the English-language version of A World History of Suzerainty: A Modern History of East and West Asia and Translated Concepts, edited by Okamoto Takashi (Tōyō Bunko, 2019), which is available to download as an open-access publication through Tōyō Bunko’s digital repository.
