Head, Department of East Asian Languages & Cultures, at the University of Illinois, has written studies in both Japanese and English, including Jewel in the Ashes (Harvard University Asia Center, 2000), "Buddhism in Japan," in The Encyclopedia of Religion, 2nd ed. He is currently working on major studies of indebtedness in Japanese Buddhism and of Buddhist écriture and culture in premodern Japan
