About - MIYAMA Emily

Miyama Emily 深山絵実梨 is an Assistant Professor at the Waseda Institute for Advanced Study, Waseda University, Tokyo. Her research focuses on the formation and development of maritime networks in Metal Age Southeast Asia, aiming to elucidate their social, economic, and cultural dynamics. She examines the movement patterns of widely distributed artifacts, such as earrings, across these regions, considering factors such as trade, migration, and itinerant artisanship by analyzing the production systems of archaeological artifacts. Recently, her research has expanded to include the South Ryukyu Islands.

Dr. Miyama received the 12th Young Researcher Award from the Japan Society for Southeast Asian Archaeology and the 19th JSPS Prize from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, both in 2022. In 2021, she published Tōnan Ajia senshi jidai no kaiiki nettowāku: Nankai no mimikazari 東南含岐含先史時代巻海域徽機畿詰及企: 南海巻耳飾 [Earrings of the South China Sea in prehistoric maritime Southeast Asian network], Tokyo, Yuzankaku.
