About - Carina ROTH

Carina Roth is a senior lecturer in the Department of East Asian Studies, University of Geneva, Switzerland. She specializes in the history and anthropology of Japanese religions, past and present. Her recent publications include Defining Shugendō: Critical Studies on Japanese Mountain Religion (with Andrea Castiglioni and Fabio Rambelli, Bloomsbury Academic, 2020) and “Rising Tides, Ebbing Tides: Appeasement Rituals around Perinatal Death in Contemporary Japan” (in Fabienne Portier-Le Cocq, ed., Debates around Abortion in the Global North: Europe, North America, Russia and Asia, Routledge, 2023). In 2022, Defining Shugendō received the annual award of the Association for the Study of Japanese Mountain Religion (Nihon Sangaku Shugen Gakkai 日本山岳修験学会).
