Matthias Hayek
is associate professor in Oriental languages and civilizations at Paris Diderot University (Sorbonne Paris Cité). His current research focuses on two themes: the transmission of specialized knowledge through manuals and encyclopedias in Japan during the 17th-18th centuries; the role played by literati discourse in rationalizing cosmological thoughts and popular beliefs in Edo Japan. His recent publications include: Onmyôdô in Japanese History (Japanese Journal of Religious Studies 40:1, co-editor with Hayashi Makoto, 2013), "Les manuels de divination japonais au début de l'époque d'Edo (xvne siècle) : décloisonnement, compilation, et vulgarisation," Extrême-Orient Extrême-Occident 35 (2013); "The Eight Trigrams and their Changes: An Inquiry into Japanese Early Modern Divination," Japanese Journal of Religious Studies 38:2 (2011).
