Herman Ooms
is emeritus professor of history at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He has published Tokugawa Ideology: Early Constructs, 1570-1680 (Princeton University Press, 1985), Tokugawa Village Practice: Class, Status, Power, Law (California University Press, 1996), "Early Modern Japanese Intellectual History: USA, France, Germany," in The Journal of the Historical Society, 5 (2005), Imperial Politics and Symbolics in Ancient Japan: The Tenmu Dynasty, 650-800 (University of Hawai'i Press, 2009). His current interest is: Daoism, politics, purity in Ancient Japan.
